The Teochew Entrepreneur Award (TEA) is an inaugural award organized by Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan, Local International Affairs (LIA) committee.
Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan is a Teochew Clan association in Singapore with Poit Ip referring to the eight districts in the Teochew dialects in the province of Guangdong, China.
It was established in 1929 by several prominent Teochew community leaders which included Mr Lim Nee Soon, Mr Yeo Chan Boon, Mr Huang Wei Ting and Mr Lee Wee Nam.
In 2013, Mr George Quek, Founder and Chairman of BreadTalk Group Ltd became the new leader of the umbrella body for Teochew clans in Singapore, who aims to unite the Teochew community. Under his leadership, the association has seen an increase in membership to 7000, won the Singapore Federation of the Chinese Clans 2014 Award and held a 12-days Teochew Festival with 100,000 people in attendance.
One of the core missions of the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan is to promote Teochew values and culture. The pioneer Teochew Towkays are known for their resilience, hardwork, honesty and sincerity.
This award hopes to serve as a platform for local businessman to establish business links and relationships as well as engagement with Teochew entrepreneurs and businesses in other ASEAN countries.
