Dr George began his foray in the F&B business in Taiwan in 1982, after he had to give up his plans to pursue a further education in fine arts due to financial difficulties. From peddling Dragon Beard Candy behind a mobile cart, to operating a chain of 21 stalls serving Southeast Asian food, his eye for aesthetics and keen business acumen brought him his first taste of modest success in the industry. He eventually returned to Singapore after a decade and pioneered the food court concept. The food court chain grew rapidly and expanded to China in a few short years, earning him the reputation of the ‘Food Court King’ at that time.

In 2000, he founded BreadTalk®, a lifestyle boutique bakery brand, and brought it to list on the SGX in 2003. George is a Brand Champion who has positioned the Group’s current portfolio of close to 1000 stores into innovative concepts now widely accepted in Asia and throughout the world. The Group’s stable of brands spans familiar bakery household names like BreadTalk®, Toast Box, The Icing Room, Bread Society and Thye Moh Chan; to comforting local favourites in Food Republic and family restaurants such as Din Tai Fung and RamenPlay.

In his personal capacity, George is also actively involved in many community projects. A firm believer in giving back to the society, George drives the philanthropic activities at his alma mater, as the Chairman of Xinmin Secondary School Advisory Committee. To balance his busy schedule, George takes a special interest in collecting works of art including Chinese paintings and sculptures and enjoys pre-dawn qi-gong practice.
